Ani's Choice Points

In 1978 Ani, the program from Ken Kahn's MIT thesis (rewritten as AI-TR-540), decided how each character in its Cinderella film should move: how fast, how actively, how directly, and how each compares with the others. These are its 102 decisions, rerun from its original code on a revived Director. Pick any one to see why Ani made it, attempt by attempt. Back to the film.

How each character moves

Each cell is one choice point. The small number is the attempt at which Ani settled it, out of all the attempts in the run.

How the characters compare

Relative choice points compare two characters on one quality. Ani makes them while choosing a character's own values, and uses them as suggestions.

The whole run, attempt by attempt

Each row is a choice point and each mark an attempt to make it, from left to right in the order Ani made them. Grey marks are postponements; a colored mark is the attempt that decided. The diagonal sweeps are Ani going round the characters again and again, each time with more to go on. Click a mark to see that choice.
